Am I “Neurodivergent Enough” for Neuro Pride Ireland?

We’ve received a few messages from people who want to participate in Neuro Pride, but aren’t sure if they can identify as Neurodivergent. They’re messages along the lines of

“I’m dyslexic/dyspraxic. Is that enough?”

“I have PTSD/anxiety/depression. Does that count?”

“I’m pretty sure I have ADHD/I’m autistic, but I don’t have a diagnosis. Can I still join your group?”

And the answer is “Yes, of course, and absolutely!

There are many neurotypes, neurological profiles, and conditions that fall under the umbrella term “neurodivergent/ND”. Check out this post to learn more about the different ‘neuro-words’.

Some examples of Neurodivergencies include but are not limited to: Autism, ADHD, Dyspraxia, Dyslexia, Depression, Anxiety, PTSD, and Migraines. For a more detailed, but not exhaustive list please refer to the end of this post.

However, there are many more.

Not everybody with those neuro-profiles/conditions identifies as Neurodivergent. But if you do, you are valid. You are welcome in our ND only participants group.

We aren’t here to assess, evaluate, judge or dismiss your identity. This is not what Neuro Pride is about. Neuro Pride is a celebration of our ND culture, communities, and identities.

We understand that not everybody has access to an official diagnosis. Not everybody wants a medical diagnosis. If you identify as ND, you are welcome in our ND spaces.
